Liam Reid has won the 2020 Mr Gay New Zealand sash after a weekend of challenges and then the finale announcement on stage at the Ending HIV Big Gay Out in Auckland today.

The 24-year-old from Wellington received the most amount of votes across seven challenge categories including public speaking, LGBTI knowledge test, charity and a one on one interview.

Reid narrowly took victory in the competition ahead of Shaneel Lal and Jethro Gardiner.

All five finalists from across the country attended sessions with Outline and New Zealand AIDS Foundation on Saturday to build on their LGBTI leadership and outreach goals and each one showed incredible interest in playing a part in their community.

Finalists raised more than $1,600 in an hour for the charity challenge at the Big Gay Out on Sunday including a donation from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Challenge winners included;

  • Opinion piece – Ray Wedlake
  • Public Vote – Shaneel Lal
  • Interview – Liam Reid
  • Written Test – Shaneel Lal
  • Charity – Liam Reid
  • Public Speaking – Shaneel Lal & Jethro Gardiner

It is now expected that Liam will now go on to represent New Zealand at Mr Gay World at Port Elizabeth in South Africa in April.
