Same-sex marriage in Mexico has officially been legalised, with the legislation being voted into law by all of the nation’s state parliaments.

Tamaulipas became the final state to vote in favour of the law following the states of Durango, Guerrero, the State of Mexico, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Yucatán moving to allow equal marriage earlier in 2022.

Celebrating the final vote, LGBTQ+ organisation Yaaj Mexico posted to Twitter about the result saying, “With 23 votes in favour, two against, and one abstention, equal marriage is approved in Tamaulipas, the last state to guarantee this right.”

“Our entire congratulations to civil society and wills that have fought for decades for equality.”

While the move shows progress in Mexico for the rainbow community, many highlight that the nation has a long way to go, especially regarding violence towards the LGBTQ+ community, where the nation is seen as the second deadliest country in the world for Trans people.
