Dua Lipa has called out Qatar on its human rights and shut down rumours that she will perform at the nation’s World Cup opening ceremony.

Dua Lipa, who is currently touring Australia after coming to Aotearoa, took to Instagram to address the rumours swirling that she would be performing at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday, 20 November.

“There is currently a lot of speculation that I will be performing at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar.”

“I will not be performing, nor have I ever been involved in any negotiation to perform,” she explained.

“I will be cheering England on from afar, and I look forward to visiting Qatar when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup.”

Currently, in Qatar, LGBTQ+ people can be jailed for up to seven years if convicted of having sex; additionally, under Sharia law, homosexuality is punishable by death.
