At the heart of the spectacle is a captivating performance by Stewart Adam McKensy as Lola, the fiery and fiercely passionate drag queen who helps turn the fate of a failing shoe factory. McKensy’s portrayal of Lola is a tour de force, showcasing a powerful range of emotions from raw vulnerability to self-empowered exuberance. Their poignant portrayal is convincing and deeply moving, affirming their immense talent and dedication to their craft.

The musical’s Grammy and Tony-winning score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper is nothing short of brilliant. Lauper’s songs perfectly encapsulate the narrative’s range of emotions – from the rousing “Sex is in the Heel” to the achingly tender “Not My Father’s Son” – inspiring the show with irresistible rhythm and soul. Lauper’s music and lyrics demonstrate her genius, encapsulating the highs, lows, and everything in between in the characters’ lives.

Equally commendable is the ensemble of drag queens in the show. The cast of queens exudes charm, flamboyance, and grace, adding to the glitz and glamour of the production.

The choreography of their numbers was impeccable, and the performers shone in every scene; their sparkling performances are a testament to the authentic representation of the LGBTQ+ community, playing a pivotal role in making the show a resounding success.

The sequences are smooth and dynamic, providing the narrative with an enticing visual appeal, thanks to the musical numbers being so effectively choreographed – they not only highlight the performer’s abilities but also perfectly serve the story, driving the narrative forward with energy and stamina.

The set design and costumes deserve an extra special mention. Vibrant and alive with colour, the costumes and set effectively transport the audience to the world of the characters. The titular “kinky boots” themselves are a sight to behold, symbolising the transformation and liberation at the story’s core.

To summarise, Kinky Boots is a theatrical treat that is as uplifting as it is entertaining. It strikes a delicate balance between frivolity and depth, between spectacle and substance, while teaching us about acceptance and the courage to embrace change and diversity.

Don’t miss the chance to see Kinky Boots at Auckland’s home of musical theatre, The Civic, from Thursday, 25 May, and Wellington’s St. James Theatre from Wednesday, 28 June.
