U.S. President Joe Biden has hit out at new state laws imposing stricter regulations on gender-changing medical procedures for children and removing or restricting books from schools and libraries.
During a joint press conference with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, President Biden emphasised his unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community. His remarks came just days ahead of a grand Pride Month celebration scheduled to take place at the White House.
Addressing reporters from the East Room podium, President Biden passionately defended the rights of the gay and transgender community. In response to a question about a fearful family contemplating leaving the United States, he reassured them, stating, “I will call them, let them know that the president in this administration has their back.”
Expressing his dismay, President Biden criticised the “hysterical” and, in his view, prejudiced individuals behind enacting such laws across the country. He condemned their tactics, labelling them as fear-mongering and baseless. In his words, “It’s an appeal to fear, and it’s an appeal that is unjustified and ugly. These are our kids; these are our neighbours. It’s cruel, and it is callous.”
President Biden’s strong remarks underscore his commitment to upholding the rights and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community. By vocally opposing discriminatory laws and expressing support for those affected, he aims to foster an environment of inclusivity and equality for all.
