“That is not in the public interest, I can assure you!” The Finance Minister insisted to National’s Deputy Leader.
Has there ever been a more awkward parliamentary moment?
As National’s Deputy Leader Nicola Willis and the Labour Government’s Finance Minister traded barbs about perceived fiscal ‘holes’ in each other’s financial plans, Willis lept to her feet and retorted, ‘How big is his hole…’ before falling into hysterics with many of her colleagues.
The Finance Minister was happy to make light of the moment retorting “That is not in the public interest, I can assure you!”
The moment has been perceived to be a genuine slip of the tongue by Willis, rather than a planned attempt to put Robertson on the back foot.
