Set in Aotearoa, New Zealand, “Mysterious Ways” delves into the passionate love story of an English Anglican vicar and his Samoan boyfriend, providing a poignant examination of the intersections between sexuality, faith, and culture.

The kiwi-pacifika film, which is set to grace screens in select cinemas till 7th September, follows a couple’s heartfelt journey to secure a church wedding, navigating the multifaceted cultural and religious hurdles that stand in their way. Richard Short, known for roles in “Mary Kills People” and “Tragedy of Macbeth,” plays the vicar, while the Samoan theatre sensation Nick Afoa makes his cinematic debut. Afoa previously captivated audiences with his portrayal of Simba in the Australian rendition of “The Lion King.” Other notable cast members include Michael Hurst, Elisabeth Easther, Te Radar, Becky McEwen, Maureen Fepuleai, and the fresh-faced Joe Malu Folau.

Paul Oremland, with an acclaimed track record including the Netflix-aired documentary “100 Men,” directed the film. Alongside Oremland, Dianna Fuemana and Harry McNaughton have shouldered the writing responsibilities. Ngaire Fuata, with over three decades of experience producing the Pacific Islands-focused show “Tagata Pasifika” on TVNZ, steps into the producer role for “Mysterious Ways.”

Oremland, recognised for his long-standing commitment to highlighting the LGBTQ+ narrative in the media, remarked on the film’s underlying message: “In today’s age, many religious institutions sadly equate homosexuality with sin, leading to dire consequences for countless individuals in terms of self-worth, familial estrangement, and fostering prejudice. Through ‘Mysterious Ways,’ we champion a love tale where divine support is unwavering, emphasising a message that is timely and crucial.”

Producer Fuata voiced her decision to back “Mysterious Ways” as her inaugural feature-length project, lauding Oremland’s vision and determination to spotlight this poignant LGBTQ+ story. She commented, “This is a drama imbued with genuine emotion and challenging outdated perceptions. I’ve always embraced challenges. The combined expertise, enthusiasm, resilience, and team spirit of Paul and our wonderful ensemble of actors and crew were pivotal in realising this project.”

The film’s executive production team boasts names like Taualeo’o Stephen Stehlin, Brian Holland, Tracey Gardiner, Tom Abell, Jonathan Unger, and Richard Short.

“Mysterious Ways” premiered at Auckland’s Rialto Cinemas on 16th August, with funds going to the Burnett Foundation. Following the successful premiere, screenings will now take place at various cinemas across New Zealand, including Rialto in Auckland, Event Cinemas in Palmerston North, New Plymouth, and Blenheim, culminating at Lumiere in Christchurch on 7th September.
