Last weekend’s Wellington International Pride Incorporated (WIPP) AGM heralded the end of an era for the iconic street parade as members vote to dissolve WIPP.
In an exclusive statement to YOUR EX, the organisation says, “a new team can now step in and pick up the reigns so that our fabulous Wellington Rainbow Community can Parade once again.”
“From 2017 WIPP overcame significant challenges to deliver annual Parades, including Aotearoa New Zealand’s first major event after the tragic events of 15 March 2019 and the last major event before the first covid lockdown. It was the second covid lockdown that forced the parade into hibernation. WIPP members have now voted unanimously to dissolve the incorporated society.
“With no proposals received on the day to continue the organisation, the AGM resolved dissolution of WIPP paving the way for a new entity to be developed with the FULL support of Wellington’s Rainbow Communities.
“Given WIPP retained funds from previous years’, members voted to establish a Grants Committee and encourage Wellington rainbow groups that have previously participated or supported WIPP to keep an eye out for announcements inviting applications seeking support for their initiatives.
“On behalf of all members of WIPP, a big shout out to all those who have helped in any capacity with WIP Inc. since 2017. Your support and contributions have been thoroughly appreciated and the membership hopes that now that the legacy of WIPP has taken its place in NZ’s Queerstory, a new team can now step in and pick up the reigns so that our fabulous Wellington Rainbow Community can Parade once again.”
