Angela Kinsey, best known for her role as Angela Martin in the American version of “The Office,” has opened up about her experience portraying an “uptight Christian cat lady” and campaigning to remove gay jokes from the hit series.
Kinsley, who made the comments during an episode of Rainn Wilson’s podcast, “Soul Boom,” shared insights into her experiences on the show, which aired from 2005 to 2013.
During the conversation with Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, Angela’s intermittent romantic interest in the sitcom, Kinsey revealed that there were occasions when she felt uncomfortable with some of the content scripted for her character. Specifically, she recalled a moment from the season three opener, “Gay Witch Hunt,” which centres around the office discovering that Oscar Martinez, another character, is gay.
Kinsey expressed unease about a particular scene involving a joke directed at Oscar that she felt did not align with her understanding of compassion and kindness. “There was a joke where Angela Martin was overly judgmental, invoking Jesus, and I just thought, ‘That’s not what Jesus represents to me.’ I didn’t feel good about that,” Kinsey explained. After discussing her concerns with show-runner Greg Daniels, the joke was ultimately removed from the episode.
Oscar Nuñez, who portrayed Oscar, also commented on the episode during the “Office Ladies” podcast, co-hosted by Jenna Fischer. He recalled an improvised moment where Steve Carell, playing Michael Scott, was meant to give a reluctant kiss but instead opted for an awkward and memorable kiss, which Nuñez humorously described as “Carell’s insane!”
