Former New York congressman George Santos has urged gay Republicans attending the Republican National Convention (RNC) to come out and embrace their sexuality.
Santos posted a video on X in response to a satirical comment from The Halfway Post, which referred to the RNC in Milwaukee as “Grindr’s Super Bowl,” alluding to the popular gay dating app. The satirical post suggested that the convention could see a surge in Grindr users, implying that many Republicans might be closeted.
“I’m openly gay, no qualms about it, proud conservative Republican,” Santos stated.
“Just come out of the closet, boys. Come on, it’s fun! You can be gay and conservative.” He also mentioned that the app would likely “out” people due to increased activity in Milwaukee during the RNC.

Downdetector reported a notable rise in Grindr outages, particularly in the Milwaukee area, indicating increased usage. This phenomenon was also observed in 2016 when Grindr usage spiked during the RNC in Cleveland.
Santos revealed he met his husband on Grindr, sharing, “We’ve been together six years, going on seven, married for almost three.”
Despite being the first openly gay Republican elected to Congress, Santos was expelled following various ethics violations and criminal charges, which he denies. A New York Times investigation uncovered numerous fabrications in his background, including false claims of graduating from Baruch College and New York University and working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.
