Murray Hill, a celebrated New York drag king, is set to host the first-ever drag king reality competition series, The King of Drag, which will premiere in 2025 on streaming platform Revry.
Unlike existing drag competitions, this six-episode series will highlight the unique talents of drag kings, including comedy, unconventional performances, and thought-provoking commentary on masculinity—a cornerstone of drag king culture for decades. Each episode will delve into the personal stories of the contestants, exploring their motivations and aspirations within the Drag King community.
Hill, who began performing in 1995, shared his excitement for the project, stating, “I started performing in 1995, so it’s long overdue for the kings to take centre stage. This vibrant community deserves to be in the spotlight, and I’ll be their biggest hype man. I can’t wait to work with the kings and introduce them to the biggest audience possible. That’s showbiz.”
Applications for contestants are open until January 5. Aspiring participants must submit photos, videos, a performance résumé, and responses to questions about their drag persona and costume design skills. The series promotes inclusivity, welcoming contestants across diverse gender identities, including trans-masc, cisgender women, and non-binary individuals.
