In a significant move to address past injustices, the UK Government has launched a £75 million LGBTQ+ Financial Recognition Scheme. This initiative comes after thorough discussions with the veterans themselves, acknowledging the harsh realities faced by those who served under the now-defunct “gay ban” in the military.
The scheme, which was endorsed by both the Ministry of Defence and the ministers Alistair Carns OBE MC MP and The Rt Hon John Healey MP, will see individual veterans receiving up to £70,000. This amount exceeds the cap suggested by the Etherton Review, reflecting the government’s commitment to not just compensating but also healing the scars left by decades of discrimination.
Veterans dismissed or discharged due to their sexual orientation or gender identity are set to receive a base payment of £50,000. An additional £20,000 can be claimed by those who suffered further during their service years from 1967 to 2000, showcasing a 50% increase in the financial support available.
Moreover, today’s announcement includes the opportunity for these veterans to apply for rank restoration and amendment of discharge reasons, offering them a chance to reclaim their dignity and service honours.
Defence Secretary John Healey remarked, “The historic treatment of LGBT veterans was a moral stain on our nation. Our Government is determined to right the wrongs of the past and recognise the hurt that too many endured.”
The scheme’s application portal opens tomorrow following a debate in the House of Commons. To further assist, a £90,000 fund has been allocated to charities to help with the application process for those eligible.
Besides financial compensation, four non-financial restorative measures will extend to veterans who served before 1967, including reissuing certificates of service and restoring service details in official records.
This initiative not only aims to financially recognise the veterans’ service but also to close a regrettable chapter in the history of the UK’s Armed Forces, welcoming back its LGBTQ+ veterans with the respect they deserve
