Jeremy Allen White, best known for his role in The Bear, is set to star in a limited queer romance series, Enigma Variations, based on the novel by Call Me By Your Name author André Aciman.

According to Variety, White will not only play the lead role of Paul but will also serve as a producer on the project.

First published in 2019, Enigma Variations follows Paul’s decades-spanning journey of love and desire, chronicling his romantic encounters with both men and women as he navigates self-discovery and longing across various stages of his life.

The official novel description highlights Paul’s transient relationships, from his adolescent crush on his parents’ cabinetmaker in southern Italy to his enduring connection with a woman he meets repeatedly over the years and his anonymous encounters with men in New England and New York.

“Paul’s attachments are ungraspable, transient, and forever underwritten by raw desire… We may remain enigmas to ourselves and to others, but sooner or later, we discover who we’ve always known we were.”

The series is currently in development at Netflix, continuing the platform’s investment in LGBTQ+ storytelling. Given the success of Aciman’s Call Me By Your Name—which was adapted into an Oscar-winning film—expectations are high for Enigma Variations.

White’s rising profile following his Golden Globe-winning performance in The Bear has made him one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents, and this project marks another major leading role for the actor.

No release date has been announced yet, but fans of Aciman’s work and nuanced queer storytelling will be eagerly awaiting more details.
