Auckland’s Pride celebrations are about to get a fresh twist with Pride & Play: A Night of Fun, an event that blends social gaming with an inclusive, vibrant atmosphere.
Held at Voco Auckland’s stunning 38th-floor venue, this R18 game night offers a unique space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to connect, compete, and unwind—all while enjoying breathtaking views and a curated selection of party games.
The idea for Pride & Play was born out of a passion for creating welcoming spaces and the belief that games have the power to bring people together. “After successfully trialling a smaller event during Christchurch Pride 2022, we knew there was potential to expand the idea,” say the organisers. When they discovered Voco and Bar Albert shared their vision for an “inclusive and elevated experience”, the collaboration was a natural fit.
A Game Night Like No Other
Unlike many traditional Pride events, Pride & Play offers a refreshing alternative—a night where guests can socialise over cocktails, dive into interactive games, and embrace a relaxed yet classy vibe. “We wanted to create something different from the usual Pride celebrations,” the organisers explain. “Many game nights focus on traditional strategy games, but we’ve curated a selection that is fun, social, and easy to learn, ensuring everyone can jump in and have a great time.”
The night kicks off with a half-hour cocktail reception, setting the stage for mingling and connection before the games begin. Guests will be treated to a complimentary cocktail on arrival, with drinks served in a stunning rainbow display. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Bar Albert has crafted a special Pride-themed cocktail, with $2 from each purchase going to Youthline to support LGBTQ+ youth mental health services.
What to Expect on the Night
The game selection for Pride & Play is designed for maximum fun and social engagement. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer, a casual player, or someone who’s never picked up a board game before, there’s something for everyone. “It’s for everyone who enjoys games, socialising, and meeting new people!” the organisers say enthusiastically.
Some of the highlights include:
🎲 Gay Sauna: The Board Game – a cheeky and entertaining experience
🎭 RuPaul’s Drag Race Monopoly – a fabulous twist on the classic game
😂 Cards Against Humanity – perfect for those who enjoy edgy humour
🚆 Ticket to Ride: Paris – a fast-paced, strategic favourite
For those seeking an immersive experience, the night may also feature a tabletop RPG session led by a professional Game Master. “Depending on interest, we may add this exciting interactive element to the night,” the organisers reveal.
While this year’s focus is on casual play and social fun, there’s potential for expansion. “Depending on demand, we’re open to introducing competitive elements next year!” they hint, making it clear that Pride & Play is just getting started.
The Perfect Venue for an Elevated Experience
What makes Pride & Play stand out even further is its spectacular setting. Hosted at Voco Auckland’s 38th floor, guests will enjoy panoramic views of the Sky Tower and Waitematā Harbour—a backdrop that adds an extra layer of magic to the evening. “The views are unbeatable,” say the organisers. “Plus, being on the same floor as Bar Albert makes food and beverage service incredibly convenient—a major plus compared to other venues.”
Throughout the night, guests can order from the full Bar Albert menu, ensuring delicious food and drinks are always on hand.
A Welcoming Space for All
For those who have never attended a gaming night before, the organisers have one clear message: don’t be intimidated! “Games are for everyone, no matter your experience level,” they say. “We’ll have a variety of games to suit all interests, so you’ll definitely find something you enjoy.”
At its heart, Pride & Play is about connection, inclusivity, and fun. “Seeing smiling faces and new friendships forming is what excites us the most,” the organisers share. “As an online retailer, most of our interactions with customers happen virtually, so events like these are a fantastic way to engage with both regulars from the LGBTQ+ and gaming communities and new faces alike.”
