Jay Manuel, star of TLC’s hit new series Jay & Pamela, has opened up about his journey as a trans man and his experiences living with type-three osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a rare genetic disorder.
The show, which debuted earlier this month, follows Manuel and his fiancée, Pamela Chavez, as they navigate life with OI, commonly known as brittle bone disease.
A Rare and Challenging Condition
Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic condition present from birth that results in fragile bones prone to fractures from minimal impact. According to Great Ormond Street Hospital, those with the condition may experience frequent fractures, bone deformities, and chronic pain.
Manuel described how doctors once doubted his survival, saying his parents were told he “wouldn’t make it past five years old.” Similarly, Chavez was expected to pass away before turning one. Defying those odds, both have persevered despite enduring over 400 fractures combined.
“It can be something as simple as rolling out of bed, taking a deep breath,” Chavez explained. “I have a broken rib right now. Osteogenesis imperfecta type three causes fragile bones. So, we break easily.”
Embracing His Identity as a Trans Man
Beyond his experiences with OI, Manuel also shared insights into his journey as a transgender man.
He realised he was trans in high school but didn’t have the words to express his identity at the time. However, he has been out to his family for over five years and is grateful for the support of his parents and Chavez.
“I feel there’s nothing more powerful than sharing your truth and being who you are, and, of course, sharing it on this big of a platform,” he said.
He added that authenticity is important to him, not just in terms of his gender identity but in embracing every part of who he is.
Love and Overcoming Barriers
Manuel and Chavez met online and maintained a long-distance relationship before getting engaged in 2022. During the show’s premiere, Chavez revealed that her parents initially disapproved of their relationship. However, she has chosen to move forward without resentment and is excited about entering a new chapter of her life.
Jay & Pamela has been praised for shedding light on the challenges of living with OI while also celebrating love, resilience, and self-acceptance.
