YOUR EX sits down with the Christchurch Pride Board to break down the themes, events, and preparations going into Christchurch Pride (1–30 March).

Christchurch is set to burst with rainbow brilliance this month as the 2025 Christchurch Pride Festival expands throughout this entire calendar month. This historic move, inspired by last year’s success, celebrates the vibrant queer community in Ōtautahi and promises a smorgasbord of events that capture the spirit of inclusivity, creativity, and joy.

The decision to extend the festival was driven by an undeniable demand for more opportunities to celebrate queer identity. “There is so much queer joy here we can no longer fit it into a fortnight,” explained the Christchurch Pride Board, a statement that encapsulates the exuberance of this year’s programme. With an ever-growing list of community events, the festival is poised to welcome a diverse whānau, ensuring there is something for everyone.

Returning favourites are set to make a splash this year, with the Pride Boat Party (Saturday 8), the beloved Dog Walk (Sunday 30), Drag Bingo (Wednesday 12) and the popular FriGay Drinks (Friday 15) already on the agenda. But organisers have also introduced exciting new experiences. Attendees can anticipate a body-positive pool evening that champions self-love, the highly anticipated second year of the Rainbow Ride bike ride (Saturday 29), and even a Dungeons & Dragons session (Friday 28) for those seeking a playful adventure. Notably, a live version of the Two Fat ‘Fines podcast (Sunday 23) is on the cards, alongside action-packed events like Pride Roller Derby (Friday 21) and an ŌFAF Rainbow Soccer Night (Tuesday 4). The festival will culminate with a grand closing party and community picnic, a collaborative effort with local collectives Tender Buttons and QueerHorizons, promising an out-of-this-world experience.

Following recent challenges at Auckland Pride, safety and security have taken centre stage in planning events this year. Increased security measures mean that some events have been adapted or postponed to ensure a safe environment for all. Amid these challenges, a phenomenal group of volunteers has stepped forward, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to community care and safety. Working closely with venue-specific security teams, volunteer groups, and local authorities, the Pride Board is dedicated to making 2025 a safe, welcoming space for everyone.

At its heart, the message of Christchurch Pride is clear and inclusive: “You belong here.” This simple yet powerful declaration invites every member of the community to celebrate who they are, fostering a sense of unity and belonging at the core of the festival. Looking ahead, the board hopes to deepen connections with smaller community groups, support queer-owned businesses, and expand educational events. They also aim to start archiving queer history and enhance their digital presence to reach more people in need of connection and celebration.

For those planning their Pride 2025 itinerary, festivities begin with the vibrant opening Walk of Support on 1 March. Don’t miss sexy party brand URGE taking over Christchurch’s best bar, Wunderbar Lyttelton (Saturday 22) for a hot, sweaty party sponsored by YOUR EX, before the festivities draw to a close with the closing party (Saturday 29).
