David Raven, the beloved performer behind Maisie Trollette, the United Kingdom’s longest-performing drag artist, has passed away in Brighton, England, at the age of 91.
A stalwart of Brighton’s drag scene for more than 50 years, Trollette was a central figure in the city’s LGBTQ+ community and a cornerstone of Brighton Pride, dating back to its inaugural event in 1973.
A True Drag ‘Artiste’
Close friend and fellow drag performer Scott Burey paid tribute to Raven, emphasising his unparalleled contribution to the art of drag.
“The word ‘legend’ can be flippantly used at times, losing its connection to the remarkable and extraordinary. But David – and Maisie – were both remarkable and extraordinary. He was the epitome of a true drag artiste – not queen – ARTISTE!”
Burey described Raven as a kind, generous, and incredibly funny person, both on and off stage.
“He had a mischievous streak that never faded with age. I will truly miss him and feel INCREDIBLY privileged to have called him my friend.”
A Guiding Light in the Drag Community
Fellow performer Phillip Arran, known as CC Swan, fondly recalled Raven’s mentorship and generosity.
“Maisie (David) was so generous and helpful. I’d be invited up to sing and afterwards, given tips on mic technique. When I ventured into drag myself years later, Maisie/David always encouraged me for being true to myself.”
Arran reminisced about Trollette’s shows, recalling the unpredictable, lively performances and the welcoming atmosphere Raven fostered.
“I used to love being at Maisie’s show in the old days when anything went, and everyone knew the name and phone number of her B&B. This is truly a tragic loss to the community. RIP, beautiful person.”
A Life in Drag
Born during the Great Depression on England’s southern coast, Raven found his passion in drag, forming the duo “The Trollettes” with Jimmy Court early in his career.
For his 90th birthday, Raven was honoured with a gala celebration at the Brighton Dome, where performers paid tribute with music spanning nine decades of his life.
London’s Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a venue where Maisie Trollette regularly performed, described Raven as a “doyenne of drag” who led a “life well lived.”
“Rest easy, dear.”
