We love a glow-up. Whether it’s a bold wall colour, a sparkling new kitchen handle, or just banishing that tired beige your landlord insists is “neutral,” refreshing your space can feel like the ultimate act of self-expression. But when does zhuzhing your home turn from fabulous to financially foolish?

Welcome to your guide on how to renovate with taste and intention — without tipping into over-capitalisation (aka: spending more than your home is worth in the current market).

Let’s start with the kitchen — a high-impact area where the right colour can totally transform the mood. This stunner of a space features Resene Brandy Rose on the cabinetry and walls, paired with a Resene Half Sea Fog ceiling and Resene Colorwood Whitewash benchtop.

Renovate with Pride and Purpose

Even if you’re not planning to sell tomorrow (or ever — queer retirement villages, anyone?), it still pays to think strategically. Overspending on upgrades that don’t add long-term value can leave you out of pocket and short on funds for things that matter, like annual trips to Big Gay Out or a proper summer wine fridge.

Getting a local real estate agent to assess your home’s current value can be surprisingly helpful — and free! Even if you’re nesting forever, knowing what buyers love can help guide smart investment in your space.

Paint It Proud

All-white walls might feel safe and rental-friendly, but don’t be afraid to embrace layered neutrals or warm whites that feel chic and welcoming — not clinical. In a gorgeous living space by Melle van Sambeek, Resene Triple Black White is paired with Resene Half Black White and Resene Eighth Black White across walls, décor, and fireplace.

This room is painted in Resene Triple Black White, with floor washed in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy. Mantel and fireplace in Resene Half Black White, fireplace interior stencilled in Resene Triple Black White, tables in Resene Triple Black White and DIY art and vases in Resene Eighth Black White. Sofa from Soren Liv, lamp, candleholders from A&C Homestore, bowl from H&M Home. Project by Melle van Sambeek, image by Bryce Carleton.

The result? A serene, sophisticated space with plenty of personality.

Outdoor Vibes Matter

First impressions count — whether it’s your Grindr profile or the front of your house. A quick outdoor spruce-up can add real value and charm.

In a fab refresh by Vanessa Nouwens, a deck stained in Resene Woodsman Natural and furniture in Resene Half Innocence proves outdoor zones can be bold and beautiful. Try darker stains like Resene Woodsman Charred Black to make fences disappear into the background and your plants pop.

Clean concrete surfaces with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, then glam them up with Resene Walk-on paving paint or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path in a fabulous custom colour.

Kitchens & Bathrooms: The Power Couple

These spaces are like the power gays of your home — always the centre of attention. But they can quickly turn into budget divas.

One of the easiest ways to elevate your kitchen or bathroom? Paint those cabinets. Laminate? No problem — just prep with Resene Laminate and Melamine Primer. Varnished timber? Start with Resene Waterborne Sureseal. Then slather on two coats of Resene Lustacryl and voila — a glow-up worthy of a makeover show.

Don’t skip the ceiling — particularly in kitchens, where cooking steam and random fly spots love to gather. A low-sheen finish from Resene SpaceCote hides a multitude of sins and will hold up to humidity.

Bathrooms also benefit from a good scrub with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, and you can easily freshen up tiles and trims with a lick of paint. Just don’t forget storage — there’s nothing cute about clutter when guests pop round for brunch.

Colour, Darling — But Make It Strategic

Plain white might seem like the safe choice for resale, but the wrong white can make a room feel cold or just… meh. Instead, lean into warmer tones like Resene Double Tea, Resene Eighth Canterbury Clay or Resene Double Tana — still neutral, but with soul.

You can also layer whites for texture and style. Think Resene Eighth Black White with Double Black White, Alabaster, and Double Alabaster — like the Liza Minnelli of paint combos: timeless, elegant, and just dramatic enough.

Remember: you’re not trying to please everyone. Choose what brings you joy, even if you plan to sell later. This is your sanctuary, after all.

Budget Decorating Tips from Resene Colour Experts: “Taking on a smaller space like an entryway or a powder room means you can make a statement without spending a lot of money. Try colour blocking in a statement colour, painting a mural or adding a feature wallpaper like the Resene Wallpaper Collection 39653-4.” – Amy Watkins, Resene Colour Consultant

“Small amounts of colour can have a huge impact in bringing a tired space to life. Paint decorative shapes with a few Resene testpots on small pieces like pots or a shelf. Then try adding painted colour or wallpaper offcuts to an upcycled dresser. These small projects are also easy to update or change over time.” – Meryl Southey, Resene Colour Expert

“A simple block of colour in any room is simple, cost-effective and adds immediate character. Try it behind a piece of art, cabinet or table, on a section of wall or even a section of floor or ceiling. It can also be easily painted over for a neutral or a different colour if that’s best for selling.” – Jackie Nicholls, Resene Colour Consultant

Top Tip for Renters: Want colour but can’t paint the walls? Paint a giant canvas or headboard in a bold Resene hue and hang it like artwork. It’s drama you can take with you when you move — and it won’t cost your bond.
