U.S. Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse has publicly come out, introducing the world to his boyfriend in a heartfelt Instagram post that has quickly warmed hearts across the internet.
“Introducing my boyfriend, Julian,” the Team USA runner wrote over the weekend, sharing a series of sweet photos of the couple. “Can’t believe we’re already one year in my love.” He cheekily added: “Don’t act so surprised.”
While Nuguse had not previously spoken publicly about his sexuality, he now joins the growing number of elite athletes who are living openly and proudly. His post was met with an outpouring of support and joy from fellow Olympians and fans alike.
Olympic teammate Nikki Hiltz responded with a single word: “Obsessed.” Distance runner Matt Llano added: “Love this – you will inspire so many!!!” Bobsledder Chris Kinney simply wrote, “Yay.”
Nuguse was among the many LGBTQ+ athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While nearly 200 publicly out athletes competed, including almost two dozen men, many others — like Nuguse — were out privately but hadn’t shared their stories publicly until now.
At the Paris Games, Nuguse secured a bronze medal and cemented his place in Olympic history. It marked the peak of a meteoric rise for the former Notre Dame track star, who broke the 3000-metre indoor record in 2022 and later won the U.S. national title in the same event.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Nuguse is the fourth of six children to Ethiopian parents. He continues to train at the highest level, preparing for what promises to be another remarkable season.
Now, alongside his athletic accomplishments, he’s celebrating a new chapter in his personal life — one that includes Julian, his partner of one year. With the post now live, Julian’s private Instagram is likely fielding more follow requests than ever.
Here’s to love, visibility, and another trailblazer inspiring the next generation.
