Heartstopper star Kit Connor has weighed in on the possibility of a fourth season of the hit LGBTQ+ Netflix series, saying he wouldn’t want to return “just for the sake of making it.”

Connor, 21, has played the beloved role of Nick Nelson — the kind-hearted rugby player and boyfriend to Charlie Spring (played by Joe Locke) — since the show first debuted in 2021. The series quickly became a cultural phenomenon, praised for its wholesome and joyful representation of young queer lives.

But with three successful seasons under its belt, many fans are eager to know whether Heartstopper will return for a fourth — and potentially final — instalment.

Speaking recently to The Cut, Connor was unable to confirm if production is moving forward, but opened up about how he and the show’s creative team feel about returning.

He explained they wouldn’t want to make another season “just for the sake of making it,” suggesting it’s important the story continues only if there’s something meaningful to explore. Pointing to the ageing cast, he joked, “You don’t want to see Olivia Colman driving a 30-year-old Kit Connor to high school.”

Connor, who has several other projects on the horizon, added that his current focus is on finding roles with “good writing, good filmmaker, good role.”

While his comments might worry fans hoping for closure on Nick and Charlie’s journey, there is still hope.

Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman spoke at the Waterstones Children’s Book Festival in February, offering a hopeful update: “I’m working very hard to get us a renewal for Heartstopper. It’s still ongoing. We don’t have a final answer yet. But there are so many people behind the scenes who are working really hard to make it happen. We’re feeling optimistic, we’re feeling hopeful.”

Producer Patrick Walters echoed those sentiments in a March interview with Deadline, confirming that the team is “working hard on it”, but added, “There are lots of moving parts.”

Season three was based on volumes four and five of Oseman’s graphic novel series. The sixth and final volume is expected to be published in late 2025 or 2026, meaning the show could potentially continue once more source material becomes available.

For now, fans will need to stay hopeful and patient as decisions continue to unfold behind the scenes.
