In a landmark decision highlighting the ongoing divide over LGBTQIA+ inclusion in religious communities, Canberra Baptist Church has been expelled from the NSW and ACT Baptist Association for its support of same-sex marriage and broader inclusive values.

The church had been affiliated with the denomination for nearly 100 years, but at the association’s annual assembly in Sydney, 65% of delegates voted in favour of disaffiliating with the church due to its progressive stance on marriage.

A Clash of Doctrines

In 2022, the NSW and ACT Baptist Association revised its constitution, reaffirming that marriage is to be understood solely as “a union between one man and one woman, as ordained by God.”

Canberra Baptist Church, however, has taken a different approach.

“We believe very much that we have freedom of conscience,” said Pastor Belinda Groves, speaking to ABC News.

“We can read the Bible really thoughtfully and faithfully, and we can come to different conclusions — and that’s OK.”

Groves emphasised the church’s inclusive environment:

“We can have people here who have a very traditional view of marriage… and people who are very open to having same-sex couples and de facto couples as part of the church. We will welcome everyone who comes.”

A Community Divided, Yet Proud

The expulsion has stirred a mix of sadness and pride within the Canberra Baptist community. Long-time members expressed sorrow over the severed connection but reaffirmed their commitment to inclusion, compassion, and conscience.

In addition to its LGBTQIA+ affirming stance, the church also recognises and celebrates Aboriginal culture and history, making it a unique spiritual home for many.

Not an Isolated Case

This is not the first instance of a Baptist church being expelled over LGBTQIA+ support. Hamilton Baptist Church in Newcastle was previously disaffiliated for similar reasons.

These removals mark the first time in the denomination’s 150-year history that churches have been expelled over theological disagreements related to LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

Denominational Response

In a public statement, the NSW and ACT Baptist Association reiterated its desire for shared theological alignment across its member churches.

“We don’t hold any animosity toward Canberra Baptist and Hamilton Baptist churches,” the statement read.

“We still respect and love them as churches and as people.”

The association added that support processes are in place to assist both congregations during this transition period.
