Josh Cavallo, who made global headlines as the first openly gay male professional footballer, has officially announced his departure from Adelaide United to pursue an international playing opportunity.
The 25-year-old midfielder and left-back leaves the A-League Men’s competition after five impactful seasons and 49 appearances with the club. His exit marks the close of a significant chapter in both his sporting journey and personal evolution.
Cavallo rose to global prominence in 2021 when he came out as gay while playing for Adelaide United. His announcement was celebrated across the world, sparking vital conversations about inclusion, representation, and mental health in professional sport. Yet, despite widespread support, Cavallo has continued to face challenges, including receiving death threats as recently as 2025.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Cavallo shared heartfelt thanks in a farewell statement:
“Adelaide United gave me the platform to grow as a footballer, but more importantly, it gave me a place to grow as a person. I’ll always be grateful to this club for embracing me and allowing me to live authentically.”
He added, “The support from my teammates, coaches, staff, and the incredible Reds fans has meant the world to me. Adelaide will always feel like home, and I leave with immense pride in what we’ve achieved together – both on and off the field.”
Adelaide United’s Head of Football, Marius Zanin, paid tribute to Cavallo’s lasting legacy:
“He’s become a symbol of courage, authenticity, and positive change, leaving a legacy that transcends the game. Josh didn’t just make headlines – he helped change lives.”
Despite the adversity, Cavallo has remained committed to advocacy and visibility in sport. “I go to bed, I put my head on the pillow and I’m happy. I’m Josh Cavallo, I’m the footballer … the gay footballer, and I’m super proud to say that,” he said in a recent interview.
His personal life has also brought moments of joy. In early 2024, Cavallo proposed to his partner, Leighton Morrell, in a touching on-pitch moment at Coopers Stadium, supported by the club. Sharing the moment on social media, he wrote: “Starting this year with my fiancé. Mr & Mr Coming soon.”
While the destination of his next club remains under wraps, Cavallo’s move signals the next chapter in a career that continues to inspire across both sport and culture.
