International pop star Shakira will no longer perform at the WorldPride Welcome Ceremony in Washington, D.C., after logistical challenges disrupted efforts to transport her stage setup from Boston.
Officials from Nationals Park and WorldPride confirmed the cancellation, stating that unexpected complications prevented the tour’s production equipment from being delivered and installed in time for the event.
The Colombian singer was originally slated to headline Saturday’s event, which would have marked the official kickoff to WorldPride celebrations in the U.S. capital. Gates were scheduled to open at 5:30 p.m., according to the WorldPride website.
“Like Shakira’s fans and our friends and family who have traveled from around the world to join us in DC this weekend, we are deeply disappointed that unforeseen circumstances have forced the cancellation of both this week’s concert in Boston and tomorrow’s concert at Nationals Park,” WorldPride organisers said in a statement.
In a personal message to fans, Shakira shared her regret. “I am sad and heartbroken that I will not be able to be in Washington, D.C. with you tomorrow. I hope that I can come back to D.C., as soon as I am able. Meanwhile, please know that I am eternally thankful for your unconditional support.”
Ticket refunds will be issued automatically to those who purchased through Ticketmaster or the Washington Nationals website.
Despite the concert cancellation, WorldPride festivities will continue across D.C. with a range of events planned for the weekend, including:
- WorldPride Welcome Party (benefiting Capital Cup at Bertha in Northeast D.C.)
- Capital Cup Sports Festival
- LIBERATION WKND at Black Cat
- Glitter Ball Drag Show at Shaw’s Tavern
- AIDS Memorial Quilt Display in Dupont Circle
- Taste of Pride (hosted by Dupont Circle BID & 17th Street)
- PRISM at Anthem Row / WorldPride Exchange
- Daryl Wilson Promotions: Sundaze Service Mega Day Party
While fans may be disappointed by the cancellation, the broader WorldPride celebration will continue with a strong lineup of community events highlighting inclusivity, culture, and pride.
