Karine Jean-Pierre, the history-making former White House press secretary, has officially departed from the Democratic Party, marking a significant personal and political shift.

Jean-Pierre, 50, who was the first Black and openly LGBTQ+ person to serve as White House press secretary, changed her political affiliation to “independent” in January, shortly after resigning from her post under President Joe Biden’s administration. The move was confirmed by her book publisher, Legacy Lit — an imprint of the Hachette Book Group — as part of the announcement of her upcoming memoir.

In a public statement released on Wednesday (4 June), Jean-Pierre explained her decision: “After I stepped down, I became a private citizen who, like millions of others, had to contend with what was to come next for our country. I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes. We need to be willing to exercise the ability to think creatively and plan strategically.”

Her forthcoming book, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, is set to be a provocative critique of America’s political duopoly. According to Legacy Lit, the book offers a “revelatory assessment” of the country’s fractured two-party system and encourages Americans to embrace individuality over blind party loyalty.

The publisher describes the memoir as “a hard-hitting yet hopeful critique” informed by Jean-Pierre’s insider experience in both the Obama and Biden administrations. She urges voters to “vote their values” and consider a political identity rooted in personal belief rather than party affiliation.

Jean-Pierre’s resignation came on 20 January, following the inauguration of Donald Trump for his second, non-consecutive term as U.S. president. Her departure closed a historic chapter — she succeeded Jen Psaki in 2022, becoming a powerful voice at the White House briefing podium and earning praise for her direct responses to misinformation, particularly in defence of LGBTQ+ rights.

One of her most widely respected moments came in 2023 when she firmly rejected a question about trans athletes as “irresponsible”, reinforcing her commitment to equity and clarity in a highly polarised political landscape.

Despite her acclaim, Jean-Pierre did face scrutiny near the end of her tenure, with some critics accusing her of being evasive about Biden’s physical condition amid growing concerns about his ability to serve a second term.

Her book also promises to deliver an insider’s view on a crucial turning point in U.S. politics. Legacy Lit says Jean-Pierre will recount the three pivotal weeks that led to President Biden stepping back from seeking re-election, and what she calls a “betrayal by the Democratic Party” that influenced that decision. The memoir will explore the spread of misinformation in recent elections and call for a reimagining of political identity in the U.S.
