One of the UK’s youngest drag performers made a dazzling entrance at prom, complete with full glam, pink sparkle, and a heartwarming wave of support.
Alfie Smith, 16, who performs under the name ESME Doll, attended his prom in full drag, turning heads in a Barbie-inspired look that radiated both style and courage. As Bristol’s youngest drag queen, Alfie’s decision to express his authentic self at Orchard School Bristol’s prom drew cheers and applause that quickly dispelled any nerves.
“I was nervous on the way to prom and even asked myself, ‘Why am I doing this?’” Alfie told PinkNews. “But the moment I stepped out and heard the screams, cheers and applause—it all made sense. I knew I had done the right thing.”
The moment was a powerful milestone in Alfie’s journey as a drag artist and LGBTQ+ youth. The teen credits the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie—based on the real-life story of teenage drag queen Jamie Campbell—as his inspiration for the bold move. Jamie himself responded on Instagram, calling ESME Doll’s look: “Wow darling, what a vision!”
Supported by his school, teachers, and classmates, Alfie was praised for being “inspiring.” He expressed gratitude for the “endless support” from the Orchard School Bristol community, especially one English teacher who helped him speak openly about LGBTQ+ issues—and even attended one of his shows.
“She even hung the poster in her classroom,” Alfie shared proudly.
Alfie’s Barbie-inspired look was a true family effort. With help from his parents, every detail—from the dream dress to the perfect wig—was carefully designed and planned.
“ESME Doll has helped shape who I am,” he said. “She’s helped me figure out my sexuality, my confidence—everything that makes me unique.”
Alfie began experimenting with drag in primary school and now dreams of performing on stages around the world. For him, drag is more than performance—it’s a powerful tool of self-discovery and empowerment.
“Drag helped me massively, and I can’t thank the art form enough,” he said. “It’s empowering, and I encourage anyone struggling to find themselves to try drag.”
He also had strong words for schools aiming to better support LGBTQ+ youth: “Call out homophobic and transphobic abuse. Be that trusted adult. Stand up for your students.”
Alfie concluded with a heartfelt message on trans rights, which he believes are under severe attack: “Trans kids and staff need allies now more than ever. Give them the support they need.”
Looking to the future, Alfie hopes to take ESME Doll global—and continue inspiring others to live authentically and proudly.
“We’re in 2025—we need to live with pride, confidence and power. Storm through the hate, and rise above.”
