Your Health Questions Answered: Dr Mataroria Lyndon responds to your health concerns.
Q: “I’m a lesbian in a long-term relationship, and I’ve been told I don’t need cervical screenings – is that true?”
That’s a common misconception. If you have a cervix, you should have regular cervical screenings, regardless of your sexuality or partner. Screenings detect changes caused by HPV, which is spread through skin-to-skin and sexual contact, not just penetrative sex. Around 80% of sexually active people will contract HPV at some point.
The HPV vaccine protects against the most common high-risk strains and is free for those aged 9 to 26, no matter their gender. However, even if you’re vaccinated, screenings are still important since the vaccine doesn’t cover all types of HPV.
Cervical screenings in Aotearoa now involve a simple HPV swab, which you can do yourself. Book your cervical screening with a nurse through the Tend app today.
