NZ Falcons Host Purchas Cup 2025 as Tournament Gets Underway

The Purchas Cup 2025 was officially launched last night with an opening ceremony at the All Blacks Experience in central Auckland, ushering in one of the most significant events on the inclusive rugby calendar.

The evening began with a mihi led by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei’s Joe Royal, followed by speeches from NZ Falcons President Tom Reed and All Black Ian Jones, before the ceremonial whistle was blown. More than 300 players and supporters were in attendance — making it one of the largest opening nights in the competition’s history.

A Celebration of Inclusive Rugby

Hosted this year by the New Zealand Falcons, the two-day tournament takes over Western Springs Stadium on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 September.

The Purchas Cup, named after Andrew Purchas, founder of the Sydney Convicts rugby club, has grown into a defining annual event for trans-Tasman inclusive rugby, celebrating diversity, inclusion, and community spirit alongside fierce on-field competition.
