Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has turned to unexpected musical company during his time behind bars—Taylor Swift and Charli XCX.
Pop Beats Behind Bars
In a handwritten letter circulating online and verified by TMZ, Mangione revealed he’s been using his prison-issued tablet at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Centre to explore the music of Swift and Charli—despite never having listened to either before his arrest.
This newfound interest stemmed from a viral hoax list claiming to show Mangione’s favourite artists. Curious, he tried Swift’s “cardigan” during his walks around the prison tier and found unexpected comfort in it.
Musical Turf Wars
Not everyone appreciated his pop exploration. In the same letter, Mangione recounted a humorous yet tense encounter with a fellow inmate known as “King,” who mocked his playlist and took away his tablet. His cellmate later replaced Swift and Charli with tracks by Lil Durk, suggesting Mangione’s short-lived pop phase may be over—for now.
Court Dates and Criminal Charges
Mangione appeared in court alongside his lawyer Marc Agnifilo in September 2025, facing 11 counts related to the December 4, 2024, shooting of Brian Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel. The incident sparked a high-profile manhunt, culminating in his arrest in Pennsylvania, where he now also faces federal charges, including murder with a firearm. If convicted federally, Mangione could face the death penalty.
Reflections from a Jail Cell
Despite the gravity of the charges, Mangione’s letter conveyed a tone of unexpected gratitude. He expressed appreciation for prison meals, letters from supporters, and moments of peace amidst the harsh environment.
The case remains ongoing, but in the meantime, pop music seems to be offering a strange kind of solace. Whether it’s a Taylor Swift ballad or a Charli XCX banger, Mangione has, at least briefly, found a way to face the music.
