From Elite to Olympo: Netflix’s Latest LGBTQ+ Drama Cut Short

Netflix has confirmed the cancellation of its queer-inclusive Spanish-language drama Olympo, just six months after its debut — leaving fans devastated and demanding answers.

Created by the team behind the long-running hit Elite, Olympo premiered in June 2025 with a bold and inclusive approach to storytelling, focusing on young elite athletes training at the fictional Pirineos High Performance Centre as they chase their Olympic dreams.

The sports drama was praised for its exploration of ambition, pressure, and identity — and especially for its diverse LGBTQIA+ representation.

High Stakes, Queer Love, & Raw Ambition

The series opened with a dramatic moment: competitive swimmer Núria (María Romanillos) collapses in the pool while trying to outpace her rival, Amaia (Clara Galle). What followed was a raw look into the psychological and physical cost of elite sport, interwoven with romantic entanglements, sexual discovery, and personal reckonings.

Among the standout storylines:

  • Roque Pérez (Agustín Della Corte), a gay rugby player, enters a risky relationship with teammate Sebas Sendón (Juan Perales).
  • Zoe Moral (Nira Osahia), a bisexual heptathlete, finds herself falling for fellow athlete Renata Aguilera (Andy Duato), who is intersex — a rare and celebrated moment of representation on mainstream TV.

Fans React: “At least give us some closure”

Despite Olympo’s growing fanbase and thematic similarities to Elite, which ran for eight seasons from 2018 to 2024, Netflix pulled the plug on the series with no word of renewal or conclusion.

“Olympo having a cast full of talented people and stories that were fully developed p***es me off so much,” one fan fumed on X. “Like I need to know what happens between Zoe and Renata, both as a couple and individually. At least give us some closure. Netflix is a mess.”

Another echoed the frustration:

“They didn’t even give the show a chance.”

“Olympo being cancelled is my last straw — I need DAYS to recover,” added another heartbroken viewer.

Many users referenced the recent cancellation of Boots, another queer Netflix series that was axed earlier this month despite strong critical reception and a loyal fanbase.

“Boots and now Olympo?? @netflix get your s**t together… quickly.”

Broader Trend: Queer TV Shows on the Chopping Block

The abrupt cancellation of Olympo adds to growing concern over LGBTQIA+ representation on screen. So far in 2025 alone, Netflix and other streamers have axed a string of queer series, including:

  • Boots (Netflix)
  • Clean Slate (Freevee)
  • English Teacher (Brian Jordan Alvarez’s comedy)
  • Mid-Century Modern (Matt Bomer’s series)
  • Final seasons of Andor and And Just Like That…

According to GLAAD, a staggering 40% of LGBTQ+ characters who appeared on TV between June 2024 and May 2025 will not return in 2026.

For fans of queer stories, the message is growing clearer — visibility does not always equal longevity.
