Right-wing commentator and anti-trans activist Jeffrey Younger has been widely mocked online after claiming that every Netflix series “turns into gay porn”, prompting a wave of ridicule across social media.
On Saturday 6 December, Younger took to X to announce he had cancelled his Netflix subscription, writing:
“Every show starts normal, then turns into gay porn.”
Unsurprisingly, the statement triggered immediate backlash and amusement, with many pointing out the lack of truth—and logic—in his claim.
One X user quipped in response:
“Now you know how I feel when I’m subjected to watching heterosexual couples kiss on any TV programme.”
To that, Younger replied:
“Heterosexuality is normal. Gay isn’t.”
Another user replied, “’Porn’ is overstating it a bit much,” prompting Younger to cite Mr. Robot, Season 1, Episode 3 as his example—despite the fact the show originally aired on the USA Network from 2015 to 2019, not on Netflix.
When another commenter asked if he meant Stranger Things, Younger simply responded, “Yep.”
Stranger Things? Really?
Many were quick to note that while Stranger Things includes queer characters like Robin (played by Maya Hawke) and Will Byers (played by Noah Schnapp), there are no sex scenes involving LGBTQ+ characters in the show.
“We’ve watched all of Stranger Things, and the only sex scenes we remember were between Steve and Nancy, or Nancy and Jonathan,” one commenter said. “Not exactly gay porn.”
Another user joked:
“Bro confused his Pornhub tab with Netflix.”
While someone else chimed in:
“Netflix’s algorithm is based on your own viewing habits. What exactly are you watching, Jeff?”
Others were more sarcastic:
“Oh no. How will Netflix survive.”
“Let us know what you watched so I can add it to my list.”
A case of performative outrage?
While Netflix does feature shows with LGBTQ+ characters and themes, such as Élite, which is known for its steamy (but not pornographic) content, Younger’s comment was seen by many as an attempt to generate outrage and gain attention.
One show that is known for explicit gay sex scenes is Heated Rivalry—but that’s not on Netflix. It’s only available on Crave (Canada) and HBO/HBO Max (US and Australia).
So, it seems Younger’s complaint doesn’t hold up under the most basic scrutiny. His comments feel less like concern and more like another attempt to rile up conservative culture warriors by attacking LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media.
