A new nationwide survey examining the experiences of rainbow parents navigating child-focused services in Aotearoa New Zealand has been launched.
The study is the first national survey of rainbow parent experiences in more than 20 years, and is seeking responses from LGBTQIA+, Takatāpui and MVPFAFF+ parents with children under the age of 18.
Researchers are collecting information about family structures, identity, and experiences with services and organisations that work with children, including education, health and social services. According to the research team, the findings will be used to inform the development of inclusive practice resources for child-focused services across Aotearoa New Zealand.
While rainbow families are increasingly visible, previous research and community reporting have highlighted ongoing challenges when engaging with child-focused institutions, including assumptions about family structure, repeated disclosure of identity, and a lack of inclusive policies or language.
Participation is open to people who:
- Are part of the rainbow community
- Live in Aotearoa New Zealand
- Are parents or caregivers of children under 18
The survey is available online via Moana Vā’s website and can be accessed directly at:
