Remembering William Rush

Debbie Rush, known to many as Anna Windass on Coronation Street, went on to share how her son continued to give even in death, revealing that he was an organ donor.

“Even in our darkest moment, William gave the most precious gift of all. Through being an organ donor, he has given hope and life to other families, thinking of others right to the very end. His kindness and love will forever be part of his legacy.”

She concluded her post with a request for privacy, and the poignant words:

“William will always be loved, always missed, and forever in our hearts. #BeKind.”

Iconic Role on Waterloo Road

William Rush rose to prominence as Josh Stevenson in the BBC school drama Waterloo Road, appearing in 69 episodes across series five to eight from 2009 to 2013.

Josh’s storyline broke ground at the time, portraying a young teenager coming to terms with his sexuality, entering a same-sex relationship with fellow student Nate Gurney (played by Scott Haining). His character also battled cannabis addiction and was later diagnosed with schizophrenia, offering one of the show’s most emotionally layered arcs.

On social media, many praised Rush’s portrayal and the impact it had on queer youth during a time when authentic LGBTQ+ representation was still limited.

“Can still remember how seen Josh’s coming out story made me feel when I was like 14 and quite scared,” wrote journalist George Griffiths. “Sending love to his family.”

A Career in British TV

Beyond Waterloo Road, Rush also appeared in a number of iconic British TV series, including Grange Hill, Casualty, Vera, Shameless, and Coronation Street. His final known acting credit was in 2017’s ABC drama Friday On My Mind.

Following the announcement, a number of celebrities and co-stars offered condolences to the Rush family.

  • Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati: “Sending you all the love, I’m so sorry and my deepest sympathies.”
  • Tina O’Brien: “Sending you so much love, thinking of you all.”
  • Jack P Shepherd: “Terrible to read that Debbie. Devastating news. Thinking of you all.”
  • Sally Dynevor: “Oh Debbie I’m so shocked to hear this news. Sending you so much love. What a beautiful boy he was.”

William Rush leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and a role that made many young queer viewers feel seen for the first time.
