From Baby Bear to Proud Otter: Matt McVeigh’s Journey to the Mr Bear NZ Stage
After a decade in Aotearoa, UK-born Matt McVeigh is ready to take the stage for Mr Bear New Zealand 2026 — and he’s doing it with a cheeky grin.
“I moved to New Zealand 10 years ago, and somewhere along the way I became properly out, confident, and very at home in my own skin — a big part of that was down to the bear community,” says Matt. “Let’s be honest, there’s nothing quite like a big, burly bear hug that hits all the right spots.”
Matt fell head over heels for the “warm, welcoming, and friendly vibe” of the bear scene — one he credits with helping him find his place and voice within the queer community. “The cheek, the charm, and the mischief in this community mean the world to me, so (after a push from some mates) entering Mr Bear New Zealand felt like the perfect excuse to celebrate it,” he says. “And maybe have a bit of fun shaking my arse on stage while making money for a good cause.”
For Matt, Mr Bear New Zealand is more than a competition — it’s a platform for visibility and advocacy, especially in a world where LGBTQ+ rights are increasingly under threat.
“Visibility, community, and confidence are more important than ever,” he says. “I’d want to use this platform to be an advocate by speaking up, raising awareness, and showing solidarity. The bear scene has always been about acceptance, and I’d be proud to stand for inclusion, equality, and support… with a bit of cheeky fun along the way.”
And if he takes home the title?
“I’d be the kind of titleholder who’s fun, approachable, and a little cheeky,” says Matt. “I’d celebrate our community’s confidence, inclusivity, and camaraderie… and I wouldn’t shy away from a little playful trouble.”
Bear Fantasy: Super Sexy CPR 🩺🔥
Matt’s bringing his own playful twist to the talent portion with a performance he’s dubbed “Super Sexy CPR.” Expect heat, hilarity, and just the right amount of resuscitation-themed raunch. And yes, there will be a willing CPR dummy — Matt’s just hoping there’s a sturdy table on hand!
🧡 Charity of Choice: RainbowYOUTH
Matt has chosen to support RainbowYOUTH, a local organisation that provides support, information, and advocacy for queer and gender-diverse rangatahi across Aotearoa.
