Burnett Foundation Reverses Position, Will Allow Politicians at Big Gay Out

The Burnett Foundation Aotearoa (formerly the NZAF) has reversed its earlier position and confirmed that politicians will be permitted on the main stage at this year’s Big Gay Out.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the organisation acknowledged that the decision may be controversial, but framed the move as part of its broader advocacy mission.

“Big Gay Out is always a space for joy, connection, and celebration,” the post reads. “This year, as part of our ongoing advocacy efforts, we’ll be inviting politicians onto the main stage. We know this brings mixed feelings – and that’s okay.”

The Foundation said politicians will not be given free rein to campaign or deliver speeches, emphasising that the appearances will be structured and focused on accountability rather than optics.

“This won’t be a time for empty speeches – this will be a space for facilitated discussion and accountability,” the statement continued.

The announcement marks a notable shift after earlier indications that politicians would not be given stage time at the country’s largest rainbow community event. That initial stance was met with criticism from the LGBTQ+ community, who argued that excluding political leaders removed an opportunity to publicly challenge them on issues affecting rainbow New Zealanders, including healthcare access, education, and human rights.

At the same time, others have voiced concerns that political involvement risks undermining the celebratory nature of the event, particularly in an election-adjacent climate where visibility can easily slide into performative allyship.

The Burnett Foundation said it is conscious of those tensions and is attempting to strike a balance between celebration and advocacy.

“We’re committed to balancing celebration with advocacy, and to keeping BGO safe,” the post said.

Further details about which politicians will appear on stage, how discussions will be facilitated, and what safeguards will be in place have not yet been released.
