Meet the Mr NZ Bear Contestants: Chris Rain

Twerking, Talent & Togetherness: Chris Rain Brings the Beat to Mr Bear New Zealand 2026

If there’s a dance floor nearby, chances are you’ll find Chris Rain on it — usually twerking, smiling, and dressed to impress. A lover of art, music and movement, Chris is stepping into the Mr Bear New Zealand competition with infectious energy and a heartfelt desire to give back to the community that’s shaped him.

“Hi, I’m Chris! I love art, music, and dancing. You can always find me on the dance floor, usually twerking the night away!” he laughs. “I decided to enter this competition as a way to give back to the amazing community I’ve been a part of for years — all while having fun and dancing with everyone. And, let’s not forget, I like to dress up!”

A Community That Feels Like Home

For Chris, entering Mr Bear New Zealand is about celebration — and gratitude.

“I was inspired to enter this year out of a deep desire to celebrate the bear community and give back to the group that has given me so much,” he says. “To me, the bear community is more than just a social circle; it is a home where you are always welcome exactly as you are.”

It’s that sense of warmth and acceptance that Chris wants to honour on stage. “It’s a space built on openness and belonging, and I want to represent that unique spirit with pride.”

Body Positivity, Belonging & the Next Generation

Visibility matters to Chris — especially when it comes to body diversity.

“I am a firm advocate for body positivity,” he says. “Whether you’re a cub, an otter, or a big grizzly, every body type is beautiful and handsome in its own way.”

Alongside body confidence, community building is central to his Mr Bear journey. Chris has chosen RainbowYOUTH as his charity of choice, supporting the organisation’s work empowering young people across Aotearoa.

“I’m proud to support RainbowYOUTH because they help ensure the next generation of our rainbow community feels supported and safe,” he explains. “Contributing to their cause means helping others find the same sense of belonging that I’ve found.”

A Bridge Builder in a Sash

If crowned Mr Bear New Zealand, Chris hopes to be a connector — someone who brings people together across differences.

“I’d like to be a titleholder who acts as a bridge builder,” he says. “My goal is to foster new connections and strengthen the bonds within our diverse community.”

“For me, it’s about making sure everyone feels seen, connected, and part of the family. If I can help create that feeling — with a bit of dancing along the way — then I’ve done my job.”

The Mr Bear competition takes place Friday 6 February from 9pm at Phoenix on Auckland’s K Road. Free entry.
