PICS | Furry and Friendly Bears Reconnect at Abstract Hotel Meet & Greet

Bear New Zealand Week 2026 kicked off in style with the Bear Week Meet & Greet, a relaxed and inclusive social event that set the tone for a weekend full of connection, community and celebration.

Held on Wednesday 4 February in the courtyard of the Abstract Hotel in central Auckland, the Meet & Greet offered a welcoming space for Bears and their friends to catch up, make new connections and ease into the festivities ahead.

In the laid-back sunshine, attendees enjoyed light snacks and drinks from the bar, shared laughs and stories, and struck up conversations with old and new faces alike — embodying the spirit of Bear Week: warmth, diversity and belonging.

Whether stopping by after work or arriving from out of town, everyone took a moment to savour the first official Bear Week gathering, where the only requirement was to show up as you are.

This Meet & Greet marked the beginning of a packed Bear New Zealand Week — a line-up of events that includes everything from yoga and comedy nights to board games, parties and the Mr Bear New Zealand competition itself.

As one attendee said over drinks in the courtyard, “This is what community feels like — relaxed, joyful, and full of smiles.” It was more than just a meet-up; it was a reminder that Bear New Zealand Week isn’t just a festival — it’s a home away from home for all who attend.
