Time Warp Again: Rocky Horror Opens in Auckland This Week

The wait is finally over. After 15 years away, The Rocky Horror Show is back in New Zealand, opening this week with a sensational West End cast direct from the UK.

The classic musical lands in Auckland first, taking over The Civic from 26 February to 8 March, before heading to Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal from 11–15 March (with limited availability), and Wellington’s St James Theatre from 18–29 March. Mid-week performances are expected to offer the best seat availability.

50 Fabulous Years of Glam, Glitter and Rock ’n’ Roll

It’s bigger, bolder and brasher than ever. Written 50 years ago by New Zealand-born creator Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Show has become a global phenomenon, entertaining more than 35 million people worldwide. The musical has been staged in 30 countries, translated into 20 languages, and holds the record as the longest-running contemporary musical in the world.

This latest tour is produced by Trafalgar Theatre Productions and GMG Productions, international entertainment companies known for bringing major stage hits to the Asia Pacific. Their recent New Zealand successes include The Play That Goes Wrong, Madagascar The Musical and Beauty and the Beast.

“This isn’t just a musical – it’s a wild, glitter-soaked party,” organisers promise, encouraging audiences to dust off their corsets, strap on their heels and prepare to Time Warp like it’s 1973.

A High-Energy Spectacular

The story follows squeaky-clean college sweethearts Brad and his fiancée Janet, who, after a twist of fate, become stranded outside a mysterious mansion. Inside, they encounter the fabulous and flamboyant Dr Frank’n’Furter and are swept into an outrageous adventure packed with fun, frolics, frocks and frivolity.

Directed by Christopher Luscombe, the production features the show’s iconic numbers, including Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet and the pelvic-thrusting anthem Time Warp.

“What a great joy it is to have the world’s favourite rock and roll, rainbow musical, right back where it gestated. Break out the fishnets,” said O’Brien.

Critics continue to shower the show with praise. The Daily Express calls it “FIERCE AND FABULOUS FUN!”, while the Evening Standard describes it as “STILL THE SEXIEST & FUNNIEST SHOW IN TOWN”. The Telegraph awarded it five stars.

Strictly Limited Seasons

With a running time of two hours (including interval) and an age recommendation of 12+ — “contains naughty bits – and we wouldn’t have it any other way” — the production promises an unapologetically outrageous night at the theatre.

Whether you’re a devoted fan or a Rocky first-timer, audiences are encouraged to dress up, shout out and fully embrace the celebration.

But be quick — these are strictly limited seasons. Miss it, and you’ll miss the chance to “take a jump to the left… and a step to the riiight”.
