Dan Levy has honoured his longtime co-star Catherine O’Hara with a heartfelt tribute following her passing at age 71.
The Schitt’s Creek co-creator and star took to Instagram to reflect on his special bond with O’Hara, who played the eccentric and iconic Moira Rose — the onscreen mother to Levy’s character, David — on the critically acclaimed CBC sitcom from 2015 to 2020.
“What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years,” Levy wrote.
“Having spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her.”
Levy extended his love to “every member of her big, beautiful family,” including her husband, Bo Welch, and sons Matthew and Luke.
The tribute featured two photos: a selfie of the pair and a still from the Schitt’s Creek episode “Asbestos Fest,” where O’Hara delivered a scene-stealing performance as Moira, a flamboyant former soap star headlining a charity event.
O’Hara’s portrayal of Moira Rose became a cultural phenomenon — with her extravagant wardrobe, elaborate wigs, and unforgettable one-liners winning over audiences, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. Schitt’s Creek earned widespread praise for its positive and loving depiction of a gay character fully embraced by his family.
Tributes have been pouring in across Hollywood for O’Hara, a beloved screen legend known for her work in both film and television. Her extensive credits include classics such as Home Alone, Beetlejuice, and more recent appearances in The Studio and The Last of Us.
Beyond Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara shared a decades-long creative partnership with Eugene Levy, starring together in numerous Christopher Guest mockumentaries such as Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, and A Mighty Wind.
