Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms Buffy Reboot Cancelled

Fans hoping to return to Sunnydale will have to wait a little longer. Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed that the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will no longer move forward.

The actor shared the news with fans on Instagram, revealing that the sequel series — titled Buffy: New Sunnydale — has officially been scrapped after the project failed to secure a full series order.

ā€œI’m really sad to have to share this but I wanted you all to hear it from me,ā€ Gellar wrote.

ā€œUnfortunately, Hulu has decided to not move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.ā€

A return to Sunnydale that won’t happen — for now

The project had generated excitement among fans when it was first announced last year, with Gellar set to reprise her role as iconic vampire slayer Buffy Summers while also serving as an executive producer.

A pilot episode was reportedly filmed in 2025, but the series was never officially greenlit beyond that stage.

The reboot was being developed by Oscar-winning filmmaker ChloƩ Zhao, who directed the pilot and helped bring the revival concept to life.

Young actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong had also been cast in a lead role as the next generation slayer.

A beloved cult classic

Originally airing from 1997 to 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer became one of the most influential genre shows of its era.

The series followed Buffy Summers, a teenage girl chosen to battle vampires, demons and other supernatural threats while navigating life, friendship and growing up.

Over time, the show developed a devoted global fanbase and earned a reputation as a queer cult classic, thanks in part to groundbreaking LGBTQ storylines.

Gratitude for the attempt

Despite the disappointment, Gellar expressed gratitude to Zhao and everyone involved in attempting to bring the Slayer back to television.

ā€œI want to thank ChloĆ© Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,ā€ she wrote.

ā€œAnd thanks to ChloĆ©, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means — not only to me but to all of you.ā€

Gellar also reassured fans that the spirit of the series remains strong.

ā€œI promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.ā€
