David Geffen and David Armstrong have officially finalised their divorce, with the billionaire music and film mogul reportedly reaching a settlement with his ex; the exact terms remain unclear, as they are not detailed in the court documents.
Geffen, who made his billions after founding Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and DGC Records, as well as co-founding the DreamWorks SKG film studio, married Armstrong in 2023 and did not sign a prenuptial agreement. Geffen filed for divorce just before what would have been their second wedding anniversary, according to People.
The former couple, aged 82 and 32 respectively, cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. However, reports have suggested that money was a significant source of tension in the relationship, with Armstrong allegedly accusing Geffen of concealing financial details during their marriage.
Although Geffen and Armstrong kept their relationship largely out of the spotlight, some details have emerged through media reports over the years.
According to The New York Post, the pair reportedly met in 2020 when Armstrong was working as Geffen’s personal trainer. The public first saw them together when Geffen shared a photo of the two aboard his $400 million mega yacht.
A person described by The New York Post as a friend of Armstrong, speaking anonymously, claimed that Armstrong “was always looking for his next adventure and was really determined to improve his life”.
The couple were later reported to have married in 2023. That same year, The New York Post published photographs of Geffen and Armstrong arriving at a heliport in New York City, with both men appearing to wear gold wedding bands.
Questions around Armstrong’s sexuality have also surfaced in coverage of the relationship, although he has not publicly stated how he identifies.
In its 2023 reporting, The New York Post cited an alleged former girlfriend of Armstrong, who said she had only known him to date women. She reportedly said she was not surprised to learn of his marriage to Geffen, describing him as attractive and saying people had often made assumptions about his sexuality based on his Instagram posts.
The absence of a prenuptial agreement attracted particular attention once the divorce was filed. However, reports have suggested that Armstrong may not receive a major financial payout.
TMZ reported that Geffen has been retired for 15 years and that much of his wealth is tied up in stocks and other equities. Under California law, those assets are generally treated as separate property, meaning they may not be divided in the same way as shared marital assets.
That could leave Armstrong entitled mainly to spousal support for part of the marriage’s duration, which would be limited given the short length of the relationship.
Even without a prenup, reports have suggested the financial outcome of the divorce may be far smaller than many might expect.
