Pedro Pascal and director Todd Haynes have been spotted filming the much-anticipated gay romantic drama De Noche in Mexico.
Pascal confirmed in February that he had joined the period film, and new photos and videos from the set show the 51-year-old actor shooting scenes in Mexico City this week alongside Haynes and the wider crew.
In the footage shared online, Pascal is seen dressed in full 1930s costume for the film, wearing a vintage-style suit and fedora as he moves among old cars on set.
Haynes is best known to queer film fans as the director of Carol, while his most recent feature, May December, received an Oscar nomination for its screenplay.
According to the official synopsis, De Noche follows the “passionate and unexpected love affair between a cop (Pascal) and a boarding school teacher (Danny Ramirez) in 1930s Los Angeles, when the city is overtaken by corruption and the world is on the brink of war”.
“The two men become targets of the city’s corrupt political machine and are forced to flee to Mexico.”
Haynes has previously suggested the film could be explicit enough to receive an NC-17 rating in the United States.
In an earlier statement, he said: “This story, with Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez in the two leads, arises out of an era — all too relevant to our own — of domestic corruption, racial exploitation and global terror.
“But it emerges as a testament to the inexplicable powers of desire and love to survive and overcome even the most crippling of human barriers.”
A long road to production
De Noche has had a lengthy and at times rocky journey to the screen.
Joaquin Phoenix had originally been cast in the role now being played by Pascal, opposite Danny Ramirez, but withdrew from the project at the last minute.
Phoenix exited the film in August 2024 after having spent years developing it with Haynes, and just five days before filming was due to begin. He later declined to explain the decision.
Reports emerged later that month suggesting Pascal was interested in stepping in to revive the project.
By February, it had been confirmed that De Noche was officially back in production, with filming beginning last month.
