Ignacio “Nacho” Lago is being widely celebrated across Argentina after a resurfaced interview, featuring a touching message from his boyfriend, went viral.
The 23-year-old winger, who plays for Club Atlético Colón, became emotional in a clip from a July 2025 episode of Sangre y Luto, a weekly programme co-produced by AIRE de Santa Fe and Colón. In the segment, Lago is surprised with a video from his partner expressing love, admiration and support.
While Lago has not explicitly framed the moment as a public coming out, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Fans, journalists and politicians have all praised his openness in a sport where openly gay male players remain extremely rare.
The renewed attention comes as Lago continues to impress on the field, helping Colón rise to the top of Argentina’s second division.
The viral video
During the interview, Lago spoke about his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury. The show’s hosts then surprised him with video messages from loved ones, including one from his grandparents before the message from his partner.
In the resurfaced clip, his boyfriend Gonzalo says: “All I can do is congratulate you and thank you for being such an excellent person.
“You’re such a professional. I know how much effort you put into this, I know you have a dream, and I love you very much.
“I’m sending you a huge kiss and thank you for defending the colours of my city.”

Lago appeared genuinely surprised, admitting he had no idea Gonzalo had arranged the messages, despite the couple living together.
Reflecting on their relationship, he said: “It’s an irrational love. We live it this way, just like with football. We’re obsessed, and we try to express what we feel.”
