Missed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding? You can still experience its celebrated cellist, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, live with the Auckland Philharmonia.
Making his New Zealand debut this August, the internationally acclaimed musician has already sold out one Auckland performance. That makes the Six-thirty Session: Sheku & Elgar the only remaining opportunity to see one of classical music’s most in-demand young artists in the city.
Kanneh-Mason first rose to prominence after winning BBC Young Musician of the Year and has since performed on some of the world’s leading stages, including as Artist-in-Residence with the New York Philharmonic.
For his Auckland appearance, he will perform Elgar’s deeply moving Cello Concerto, the composer’s final major work, written in the aftermath of the First World War.
The programme also includes Sibelius’ heroic Fifth Symphony, renowned for its soaring and instantly recognisable swan theme.
Beginning at 6.30pm, the concert is perfectly timed for a post-work catch-up with friends, offering the chance to enjoy an unforgettable performance from Auckland’s orchestra and still make an 8pm dinner reservation.
With limited opportunities to see Kanneh-Mason during his New Zealand debut, this is one concert classical music fans will not want to miss.
