The 12-Hour Beauty Survival Guide

Discover Angus McDougall’s long-wear beauty essentials and five-minute makeup tips for staying fresh, polished and shine-free for up to 12 hours.

There are some days when your makeup has to work almost as hard as you do.

For me, it’s New Zealand Fashion Week, filming content, interviewing designers, a full day in the office that rolls straight into dinner, or one event after another where there’s simply no time to head home and start your face from scratch.

The goal isn’t looking like you’ve just stepped out of your bathroom at 9pm. It’s looking polished. Not shiny. Fresh. Effortless. And smelling just as good as you did when you left the house that morning.

After years of trying just about everything, these are the products and little tricks I rely on when I need my makeup to go the distance.

Build your look on a foundation that works as hard as you do

If your foundation isn’t going to last, nothing else really matters.

I’ve worn Estée Lauder Double Wear for years because once it’s on, I simply don’t have to think about it. It gives me the confidence that whether I’m sitting in meetings, filming content, walking around Fashion Week or heading straight out after work, my base is still going to look fresh hours later.

When your foundation is doing the heavy lifting, you’re spending less time fixing your makeup and more time enjoying your day.

Angus’ Tip: Take an extra minute when applying your foundation in the morning. Properly blending around the nose, jawline and hairline makes a huge difference to how it wears throughout the day.

Bring your complexion back to life

If there’s one product I’ve completely fallen in love with this year, it’s MAC Glow Play Blush.

[Text Wrapping Break]It melts beautifully into the skin and gives you that healthy, fresh complexion without ever looking overdone. It’s even become a regular feature in my TikTok Get Ready With Me videos because it photographs beautifully as well as looking incredible in real life.

After a long day, adding just a touch of blush instantly makes you look more awake.

Angus’ Tip: Rather than applying blush to the apples of my cheeks, I place it high on my cheekbones and blend it upwards in a soft V-shape towards my hairline. It creates a much more lifted, modern look and helps define the face without feeling overly sculpted.

Powder strategically, not everywhere

I’m probably one of the biggest users of powder you’ll meet, but I’ve learnt that where you apply it is far more important than how much you apply.

Rather than adding more foundation throughout the day, I lightly powder just the areas that need it, usually through the T-zone.

If, like me, you’ve had a little Botox, you can generally get away with using a bit more powder because there are fewer expression lines for it to settle into. If you haven’t, less really is more. Too much powder can sit in fine lines and wrinkles, making them appear more noticeable.

At the moment, I’m loving the BYS Translucent Loose Powder from Kmart. It’s an absolute bargain and honestly punches well above its price point. For touch-ups during the day, I always reach for a pressed powder, and MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation is hard to beat for taking down shine while keeping your makeup looking fresh rather than overdone.

One product that has already earned a permanent place in my bag is ONE/SIZE Oil Sucker Liquid Blotting Paper Spray from beauty icon Patrick Starrr. This somehow removes shine, with results in seconds; it’s a game changer and comes in two sizes.

Angus’ Tip: Think of powder as maintenance, not a makeover. Less product in the right places will almost always look fresher than adding another layer of foundation.

Lock everything into place

MAC Fix+ Stay Over is one of the best setting sprays I’ve ever used. It locks everything into place without making your skin feel tight and helps your makeup look just as good hours later as it did when you first applied it.

Angus’ Tip: Spray in an ‘X’ followed by a ‘T’ from around 30 centimetres away for an even finish.

Never underestimate a great eye pencil

The Estée Lauder Double Wear Eye Pencil has been in my makeup bag for years because it simply performs. It glides on effortlessly, stays exactly where I put it and still looks great by the end of the day.

Finish with fragrance

One of my favourite tricks is keeping the full-size bottle on my dresser at home and carrying the travel-sized version in my handbag.

Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne is perfect for this. One quick spritz before heading out instantly makes you feel polished again and comes in a range of sizes from 10ml to 100ml.

Angus’ Tip: Apply fragrance to your pulse points rather than your clothes.

The Five-Minute Reset

  1. Blot away excessoil.
  2. Lightly powder the T-zone.
  3. Add a touch of blush.
  4. Refresh with setting spray.
  5. Finish with lipstick and a spritz of fragrance.

Final Thoughts

Looking polished after twelve hours isn’t about carrying more products. It’s about carrying the right ones. Start with a foundation that works hard, make a few strategic touch-ups throughout the day and let your products do the heavy lifting.
