Kelly Osbourne has publicly distanced herself from some of her mother Sharon Osbourne’s political views, saying the pair do not agree when it comes to Tommy Robinson or issues affecting transgender people.
Speaking at the 2026 National Television Awards in London, Kelly was asked about Sharon’s support for Robinson and his “Unite the Kingdom” rally.
Her answer was immediate.
“I don’t agree. I don’t agree with my mum, no,” she said.
Kelly acknowledged that publicly disagreeing with someone she loves is complicated, but made clear that Sharon’s position is not her own.
“It’s hard because I love my mum,” she said, while adding that Sharon is entitled to her opinions.
‘It Was The Trans Community That Taught Me About Bravery’
The conversation then turned to transgender people, an issue on which Kelly said she had previously assumed she and Sharon were more closely aligned.
“I was always of the understanding that my mum was like of the same opinion as me,” she said.
Realising that was not necessarily the case left her feeling “sad”.
Kelly then spoke warmly about the role LGBTQ+ people have played in her own life.
“It was the trans community that taught me about bravery,” she said.
“For me, that is my world. And to be born in a body that doesn’t belong to you, I couldn’t imagine anything worse.”
She also credited queer and drag communities more broadly with influencing her confidence, style and sense of self.
Kelly Says Sharon May Lack Exposure
Rather than characterising her mother as deliberately hostile towards trans people, Kelly suggested some of Sharon’s views may come from limited personal experience.
“I don’t know if my mum knows enough trans people to make a fair judgement on anything to do with that sort of thing,” she said.
Kelly added that private conversations between them can be more productive and that Sharon is receptive when the two discuss LGBTQ+ issues one-on-one.
That distinction appears important to Kelly, who was careful to criticise the views without suggesting that her relationship with her mother has broken down.
Sharon Has Faced Criticism Over Trans Comments
Sharon has previously attracted criticism for comments about transgender people.
In past interviews, she has said she does not believe trans women should compete in women’s sporting categories and has raised concerns about young people making decisions around gender-affirming care.
She has also suggested that identifying as trans or non-binary can sometimes be treated like a trend among younger people.
At other times, Sharon has expressed more nuanced views, including saying that gender identity “comes from within” and that it is not for other people to decide who counts as a woman.
Kelly’s latest comments make clear, however, that she believes her own outlook on the trans community is significantly more supportive.
Disagreeing Without Cutting Someone Off
The exchange also touches on something many LGBTQ+ people and allies will recognise: navigating political or social differences within families.
Kelly does not appear interested in pretending those differences do not exist.
But she is equally unwilling to reduce her relationship with her mother to those disagreements.
Her message is essentially that love does not require political agreement — and political disagreement does not have to mean silence.
For Kelly, that means publicly supporting trans people even when doing so puts her on the opposite side of an issue from her own mum.
