Get out the power suits, tease up the perms and prepare for a night of gloriously over-the-top nostalgia, Auckland Phil is taking Tāmaki Makaurau Back to the 80s
For queer audiences, few decades delivered quite as much unapologetic fashion, pop spectacle and dancefloor drama as the 1980s, and this concert is bringing that energy to the Aotea Centre with a full orchestra behind it.
Expect the ultimate collision of synth and symphony as the Auckland Phil joins powerhouse performers for a setlist packed with retro favourites, completely reimagined for orchestra.
From Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ and Huey Lewis’ ‘The Power of Love’ to Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’ and plenty more, this is the kind of soundtrack made for singing along, getting out of your seat and embracing your inner 80s icon.
Adding even more star power to the Aotea Centre stage is award-winning stage and screen star Bella Kalolo; Wellington Paranormal actor and Modern Māori Quartet member Maaka Pohatu; and funk-soul vocalist and super-talented pianist Dillon Rhodes.
Together, the trio will bring plenty of personality, powerhouse vocals and energy to a night celebrating one of pop culture’s most unforgettable decades.
So round up your friends, your chosen family, pull out your boldest 80s look and prepare for a blast from the past where big hair, bigger hits and lots of fabulousness are very much encouraged.
