G.A.Y Auckland is moving up in the world, swapping its basement nightclub for K Road’s legendary Las Vegas Strip Club, with two nights of celebrations and some fabulous drag royalty to welcome everyone to its new home.
Auckland’s queer nightlife scene is getting a shake-up, with G.A.Y Auckland relocating to the iconic Las Vegas Strip Club at 339 Karangahape Road.
The move sees G.A.Y trade its underground nightclub for one of K Road’s most recognisable venues, complete with the famous Vegas girl perched above its entrance.
The new location will welcome the community for a launch on Friday 23 October, before pulling out all the stops for its big opening party on Saturday 24 October.
And they’re bringing out the big names for the occasion!
Auckland drag legend Miss Ribena will host Saturday night’s celebrations, with performances from RuPaul’s Drag Race and Boulet Brothers’ Dragula alumni Yuri Guaii, and Rosa Violeta, beginning at 1.30am on Sunday 25 October, during Saturday night’s party.
DJs James and Hamish will provide the soundtrack, keeping the dancefloor pumping as G.A.Y establishes its new home on Auckland’s most famous nightlife strip.
The move also marks a return to K Road for Wayne Clark, the man behind the original G.A.Y in Auckland’s city centre, whose licence the new venue is currently operating under.
“It was a stylish bar that was loved by the whole community,” Clark tells YOUR EX, recalling the original G.A.Y.
“We’re really excited to be bringing G.A.Y back to K Road at a venue we know everyone will love.”
And nobody seems more excited about the move than the evening’s hostess, Miss Ribena.
“K Road is gay road once again, darl!” she tells YOUR EX, promising fabulous shows and a proper gay old time.
“I’ve been doing this for over 25 years, I’ve played all around the country and overseas, and there is nowhere quite like K Road.”
Ribena is encouraging Auckland’s rainbow community to forget their worries for a night and get back on the dancefloor.
“Come join us for a drink and a proper gay party. Stop thinking about the election and who you’re gonna vote for and come have a dance to our amazing DJs. It will be gay, gay, gay!!!”
The relocation gives G.A.Y a prominent new address in the heart of Karangahape Road, bringing fresh queer nightlife energy to a venue already familiar to generations of Auckland partygoers.
With two nights of celebrations, Drag Race stars and Miss Ribena leading the charge, G.A.Y’s new chapter looks set to get off to a suitably outrageous start.
