Aotearoa To Turn Red For World AIDS Day

A vogue ball, community gatherings and red-lit landmarks will bring people together to remember, celebrate and challenge HIV stigma.

Burnett Foundation Aotearoa has announced World AIDS Day events across Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch for Tuesday 1 December.

Under the theme Rethink. Rebuild. Rise., the programme combines remembrance with a call for sustained investment in HIV prevention and care.

From The Ballroom To The Breakfast Table

Auckland’s commemorations begin with the Red Ribbon Vogue Ball at Galatos on Saturday 28 November, followed by a World AIDS Day Brunch at the Pullman on 1 December.

The Harbour Bridge, Sky Tower and Auckland War Memorial Museum will glow red in solidarity with people living with HIV.

Wellington’s Δ€whina centre will host breakfast from 7.30–9am on 1 December, reflecting on 40 years since homosexual law reform.

Christchurch’s Te Toka centre will host storytelling and remembrance from 5.30–7.30pm that evening. All times are NZDT.

Remembering And Looking Forward

Chief executive Liz Gibbs is urging political leaders to strengthen evidence-based prevention, treatment and community support.

The foundation says tackling stigma remains essential to its ambition of ending local HIV transmissions by 2030.
