This year WorldPride is heading to Washington, DC—a city steeped in political power, history and activism. Ryan Bos, Executive Director of Capital Pride Alliance, sat down with Oliver Hall to share why WorldPride DC 2025 promises to be a historic gathering of joy and justice.

A City That Lives and Breathes Pride

Washington, DC, has the highest per capita LGBTQ+ population in the United States, and Bos sees this as an opportunity not just to celebrate but to lead.

“In the nation’s capital, we have a unique responsibility to bring visibility to our local community while advocating for global LGBTQ+ rights,” he says. “WorldPride is our chance to show that DC is far more than just a federal city—it’s a vibrant, diverse, and thriving queer hub.”

The timing couldn’t be more significant. 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Pride in DC, making this WorldPride an even bigger occasion. “This milestone allows us to tell our history—from before Stonewall to today—and highlight the role DC continues to play in the fight for equality,” Bos explains.

And with WorldPride taking place under a second Trump presidency, the event carries even more weight. “We are gathering in a city where decisions are being made that impact LGBTQ+ rights not just in the US, but around the world,” Bos notes. “It is more crucial than ever to show solidarity, resilience, and resistance.”

Pride as Protest: The International March on Washington

WorldPride is more than just a celebration; it’s a platform for activism. In a year where LGBTQ+ rights remain under threat, DC will host an International March on Washington, giving attendees a chance to stand in solidarity with marginalised communities worldwide.

“WorldPride has a vital role in uniting people across borders to fight for justice, equity, and freedom,” Bos states. “We want attendees to leave feeling empowered to advocate for change, no matter where they call home.”

With the Trump administration doubling down on policies that restrict trans and non-binary rights, Bos emphasises that WorldPride 2025 is not just a party but a statement.

Whats in Store for Kiwi Visitors?

For those travelling from Aotearoa, WorldPride DC 2025 offers a packed schedule. In addition to the spectacular Pride Parade, highlights will include:

  • The Human Rights Conference: A space for global conversations on LGBTQ+ advocacy and policy.
  • The Capital Cup Sports Festival: A chance to compete and connect with queer athletes from around the world.
  • Tapestry of Pride at the Kennedy Center: A celebration of queer arts, theatre, and culture.

An Inclusive Pride for All

Inclusivity is at the heart of WorldPride, and Bos emphasises the importance of amplifying diverse voices. “Our programming highlights communities often marginalised within the LGBTQ+ spectrum, from BIPOC and trans individuals to those with disabilities,” he says.

DC’s Pride programming is shaped by longstanding community groups like Trans Pride Washington, DC Black Pride, DC Latinx Pride, and AAPI Pride, trying to ensure that everyone feels seen and celebrated.

Strengthening Global Connections

For Bos, WorldPride DC 2025 is an opportunity to strengthen international LGBTQ+ solidarity—including with Pacific communities.

“We are working on initiatives that will allow people to march for someone who cannot be there—whether they’re in an unsafe environment or simply unable to travel,” he reveals. “The Human Rights Conference will also serve as a vital space for global learning, where communities like those in Aotearoa can share their experiences and challenges.”

With the political landscapes shifting, Bos hopes these global connections will help fortify the LGBTQ+ movement against future challenges. “We need to use this moment to strategise, mobilise, and support each other across borders,” he says.
