NZ First leader Winston Peters took aim at Labour’s Chris Hipkins during a fiery exchange with reporters at Parliament on Thursday, calling him a “sausage eater” while rejecting claims about his parliamentary behaviour.
Peters was responding to Hipkins’ earlier comments, in which the Labour leader suggested Peters held a record for being the worst-behaved or most frequently suspended MP in the House.
“Chris Hipkins says a lot of things. But he is a sausage eater who doesn’t know what a woman is,” Peters said.
When asked by Stuff to clarify his unusual phrasing, Peters amended the jab, stating that he meant Hipkins was a “sausage roll eater”.
“But he is a right sausage sometimes,” he added.
The exchange is the latest in a string of colourful remarks from Peters, known for his off-the-cuff comments and combative style in political debates.
